George,
Idaho, Stacy Smith, just developed a manual on Best Management Practices
for Rural Road Maintenance as a graduate study through our center. The
manual was developed in cooperation with input and cooperation from the
environmental agencies in Idaho,
both State and Federal. The manual was produced to provide the maintenance
foreman and worker a guide that they could use in the field for environmentally
friendly operations that were also acceptable in principle to the regulatory
agencies. The finished product is user friendly, comes in a 7 by 9 loose
leaf binder, and was made to stay in the pickup. The unique part of these
BMP’s is that a focus group of maintenance foreman from around the state
set on the development panel, but also representative from all of the
regulatory agencies set on a panel, with cooperation and communication between
the groups. The funding was from grants, both FHWA and DEQ. The
forest service and BLM were also major players in the development and will be
using the manual in Idaho.
A training program is now being developed
to compliment the manual and will be held around the state this year.
If you are interested in the BMP manual,
it can be found on the Idaho T2 Web site, or by contacting this office

Subject: Erosion Control BMPs
Does anyone have some materials they could share with me on
erosion and sediment control best management practices they’d be willing
to share with me? I’m giving some 45 minute talks to maintenance
foremen in the next few months.
Thanks,
