T2 All:
As I discussed in Dubuque:
1. The Transportation Curriculum Coordinating Council (TCCC) has completed a detailed set of competencies for state DOT construction and maintenance personnel. These competencies help form a core curriculum, designed to help State and local DOTs establish a basis for their overall technician training and ongoing professional development programs. In particular, I invite your comments on the Safety and Work Zone competencies, and whether these competencies would be applicable to local government. If not, we will be developing a specific set for the LTAP audience. See: http://www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov/tccc/matrix.htm [corrected].
2. The TRB Subcommittee on Highway Safety Workforce Development also invites your comments on a set of Core Competencies for Highway Safety. The Core Competencies are broad-based and meant to reflect the elements of a sufficient set of highway safety education fundamentals necessary to perform as a highway safety professional, regardless of academic discipline or organization. Perhaps most importantly, we need to make sure we are training the next generation of transportation researchers in the most advanced theory and methods. The idea is to “raise the bar” in highway safety education and training to produce a next generation of highway safety professionals who understand and apply scientific principles not only in research but also in the workplace.
