Re: Information on Safety Vests worn in Dubuque, IA
To all,
As a word of caution to all T2 Centers, be careful in recommending the
vest noted in the first link below for use other than in the office or
at conferences. The webpage notes that the vest is not ANSI approved.
MUTCD 2003 in Section 6D.03 under Guidance item B advises that "all
workers exposed to the risks of moving roadway traffic or construction
equipment should wear ... apparel ... labeled as ANSI 107-1999 ..."
The vest is noted as a Surveyor's vest. If a surveyor wears the vest of
the webpage while working in the woods, the question arises from the
workers: "Do the surveyors need to change their vests when moving to a
location adjacent to a highway?" Unfortunately if a non-ANSI compliant
vest is worn for the first task, the answer may be "Yes, they should."
The change has been suggested as MUTCD guidance to perform the second
task when exposed to roadway traffic.
The easier solution is to wear an ANSI compliant vest to start with.
The same provision applies to a T2 Center employee on a Road Safety
Audit, setting up traffic counters or even while taking pictures of a
project under traffic.
The MUTCD requirements for Flagger apparel are stricter. In MUTCD
Section 6E.02, there is a shall condition for Flaggers to wear apparel
that meets ANSI 107-1999 Class 2 risk exposure.
Hope this helps,
John

Hello,
There have been several requests for information on the lime colored
safety vests Region 7 wore at the 2005 National LTAP/TTAP conference
in
Dubuque, IA. For those interested, here is the website that we
ordered
them from. http://www.ppprainwear.com/safety_vests.htm . The company
name is Plastex and they have numerous vests to choose from. Also,
here
is the link to the exact safety vest we ordered.
