My understanding is that NH DOT approves the use of crushed glass in its public works projects but only to a point of 10% of total aggregate volume.  Not sure where one would confirm or refute this.

Jim,

While Director in Rindge, I used it a lot. We had a crusher fed directly from a live floor bin, made about 30-40 yards of crush glass yearly and used it in both culvert bedding and underdrain. I found the results very positive, I called it cost avoidance, replacing the need to purchase (in applications with water present) ¾-11/2 “washed” stone with crushed glass. Glass will compact consistently too 95%. I also used it behind a concrete block retaining wall with 6” perforated pipe with very good success. I never had a frost issue. Rindge has since abandoned the practice.

Kind of took the curse off of paying to get rid of glass and paying to purchase stone.

As soon as I get a crusher purchased, and in place, I plan to restart the practice here in Amherst, (which also removes the cost of trucking) best of luck!

Has anyone tried crushed glass ( PGA) as bedding for culverts. If so what were the results? How did it affect frost heaving in the areas where it was used?
